Closet Sensation

( By: paola | 25-01-2010 | Before & After, Daily, Lighting | 1 Comment )

So one thing I really wanted to tackle was my mom’s closet (which we share). After flipping through the December issue of Lonny Mag, I found myself drooling over Anthony Gianacakos’ tiny new york apartment. Especially his closet (see pg. 104), which was small but so well done. I had to scratch the Ikea bookcase he placed in there but kept the basic elements: dark paint, bald wooden dowel and pendant lamp. I originally planned to use something more whimsical for lighting like a chandelier. But my budget wouldn’t allow it. Thus I decided to use a simple Ikea lamp shade and cord set (which comes with hardware for hanging, yay!).

I’ve decided to color coordinate our clothing by category (we’ll see how long that lasts, lol) and i’ll be organizing my shoes down below with a couple of these (boxes be gone!).

Shelf restricts some lighting (and makes it look two-toned in photographs) but I’m very happy with the result. I keep going back to look at it. Now.. on to the rest of the room.

Apologies.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Work, life and taking on a lot projects does that to us. We’re working really hard to get as much done by February 6th, the day of our housewarming party. I’m working on mom’s room (did we mention she lives here too? :) ) which I will live vicariously through until June when I can claim a space of my own. Yong is almost done painting his room and we’re working on finding the perfect (affordable) furniture for the bar.

Lots of pictures and updates when we’ve made a significant dent on things.

Paint & Plans.

We’ve finished painting the right side of the kitchen and added a second coat to the left side. I can’t even begin to explain how good it feels to get that done. It looks so clean now and finally starting to feel like a little bit of our own space.

As far a future plans go, we have a pretty good sized alcove between my mom’s bedroom and yong’s bedroom that was set up previously with (what looks like) DIY-shelves and a storage closet.

bar-before

The plan is to turn it into a bar station: Using a buffet table/sideboard to store bottles/stemware/glasses. We’re also lacking in the linen closet department so I though using a small wardrobe (Ikea?) next to the bar would help resolve that issue. In the end, it’ll all come down to what fits and what we can afford I suppose. I’m hoping to have this done by our housewarming party in late January/early February. Wish me luck!

Getting Situated.

This was our new house a week ago:

Packed

We’ve got most of our unpacking done. Gotten a good start on the painting with the living room completely done and about half of the kitchen. Still can’t convince Yong to let me paint the kitchen cabinets white (he has veto power), but I won’t give up!

This is what we’re working with now:

More updates on what definite plans we have for the space soon!

WE DID IT.

We Believed the Hype.

Hoping for the best we walked into Home Depot yesterday and purchased our paint. We chose Behr‘s Premium Plus Ultra which is supposed to be primer&paint in one. We had originally planned on trekking over to Sherwin-Williams but were scared away by the average price tag. Although Behr’s PPU has gotten mixed reviews online, I mostly found that the folks that were less than nice were self-proclaimed “professionals” who refused to work with anything but Sherwin-Williams. We don’t have an exact Behr color/chip number, we simply had them match the color chip we showed you guys earlier. So we’ll refer to it as Versailles.

We’re down to the wire now. Moving starts Saturday morning and we hope to be done by Sunday night, if all goes well.
