Paint & Plans.

We’ve finished painting the right side of the kitchen and added a second coat to the left side. I can’t even begin to explain how good it feels to get that done. It looks so clean now and finally starting to feel like a little bit of our own space.

As far a future plans go, we have a pretty good sized alcove between my mom’s bedroom and yong’s bedroom that was set up previously with (what looks like) DIY-shelves and a storage closet.

bar-before

The plan is to turn it into a bar station: Using a buffet table/sideboard to store bottles/stemware/glasses. We’re also lacking in the linen closet department so I though using a small wardrobe (Ikea?) next to the bar would help resolve that issue. In the end, it’ll all come down to what fits and what we can afford I suppose. I’m hoping to have this done by our housewarming party in late January/early February. Wish me luck!

Getting Situated.

This was our new house a week ago:

Packed

We’ve got most of our unpacking done. Gotten a good start on the painting with the living room completely done and about half of the kitchen. Still can’t convince Yong to let me paint the kitchen cabinets white (he has veto power), but I won’t give up!

This is what we’re working with now:

More updates on what definite plans we have for the space soon!

WE DID IT.

We Believed the Hype.

Hoping for the best we walked into Home Depot yesterday and purchased our paint. We chose Behr‘s Premium Plus Ultra which is supposed to be primer&paint in one. We had originally planned on trekking over to Sherwin-Williams but were scared away by the average price tag. Although Behr’s PPU has gotten mixed reviews online, I mostly found that the folks that were less than nice were self-proclaimed “professionals” who refused to work with anything but Sherwin-Williams. We don’t have an exact Behr color/chip number, we simply had them match the color chip we showed you guys earlier. So we’ll refer to it as Versailles.

We’re down to the wire now. Moving starts Saturday morning and we hope to be done by Sunday night, if all goes well.

Books: Domino’s The Book of Decorating

( By: paola | 09-12-2009 | Books | Comment? )

i finally purchased domino’s book of decorating (after months of procrastinating). if you’re not familiar with domino, it is the (now defunct) self-proclaimed magazine guide to living with style. in the book the editors write about how they’d like to think they are partly responsible for bridging the gap between professional designers and DIYers like us! always appreciative of any efforts towards giving civilians a fighting chance.

i must the say the book is amazing and a must have. filled with gorgeous photographs, useful tips (like how big a coffee table should be and how far from the couch you should place it, 18″ by the way), as well as mixing&matching, what works and why, how to re-purpose existing furniture and how to decide what to let go of. it tackles every room from entry way to living room to bedroom etc.

Color us decided.

As we’ve begun to try and decide on how to spend our money on big ticket items (i.e. sofa, dining room table) we’ve come to find that we’re not as in sync with each other’s taste as we might have thought. So compromise is the name of the game. However, we both decided we wanted the walls to be fairly neutral and to our surprise it took us all of a minute to agree on paint colors.

Versailles and Roman Column will be our two main colors throughout the house. Depending on the calibration on your monitor the colors may either look gray or a variation of beige. But they are both variations of warm grays. I’m still deciding on whether or not to choose a deep dark gray to have as an accent wall in my mom’s room (which I have absolute decision making power in). We shall see. We’ll be purchasing the paint soon along with a lot of primer. Any suggestions with brands would be very helpful! Also accepting volunteer applications to help with painting, lol.
