The first two things we did when we received our keys was A) lay on the floor and bask in the glory of it all and B) rip up a corner of the carpet in the living room. I had done some research and found that houses built in the 50s and 60s were almost always built with red or white oak hardwood in the main rooms and bedrooms (with vinyl in the kitchen and bathrooms). We had been itching to know if there might just be something good waiting for us underneath. We were prepared to have to pay to lay new flooring if we didn’t find what we were looking for.
Fortunately, we found the most beautiful (if slightly neglected) red oak flooring underneath. We believe its the original hardwood the home was built with and has held up nicely for being 61 years old. I hope I look that good when I’m 61.
We’re still debating on whether we’d like to DIY the refinishing of said flooring. It sounds exciting to think about but it also sounds like something we’ll quickly regret once the process begins. We’re going to be weighing the pros and cons and make a decision soon. In the meantime, the carpet MUST go. Off with its head!
